Dark Before Dawn: Deconstructing Doubt [John]

Dark Before Dawn: Deconstructing Doubt [John]

The Dark before the Dawn

There must be a God

Doubt is not the end of faith

Sarah kept walking in the dark

Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.

We hold each other’s hands in the dark

Jude 22 Be merciful to those who doubt

John the Baptist

Matt. 3:11-12 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

In Old Testament the messiah has 2 faces: Suffering servant, Judge of the world

Matt. 3:13-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

John is in a Valley

Matt. 11:5-6 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.

Jesus says, “Look at what I have done.”

Isaiah 35:4-6 Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.

John expected Jesus to be different

Christianity is like a nail, the harder you strike it the deeper it goes Yaroklavisky

In the valley…

Sometimes Jesus turns out to be different than we thought

Easy to doubt in a valley

Jesus gave him a verse of scripture and reminded him of the good things

Talk to Jesus, ask him to remind you of the good he has done

Remind me of the good you have done

FIRE. GOD of Abraham, GOD of Isaac, GOD of Jacob not of the philosophers and of the learned. Certitude. Certitude. Feeling. Joy. Peace. GOD of Jesus Christ. My God and your God. Your GOD will be my God. Forgetfulness of the world and of everything, except GOD. He is only found by the ways taught in the Gospel.
Grandeur of the human soul. Righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you. Joy, joy, joy, tears of joy. I have departed from him: They have forsaken me, the fount of living water. My God, will you leave me? Let me not be separated from him forever. This is eternal life, that they know you, the one true God, and the one that you sent, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ. I left him; I fled him, renounced, crucified. Let me never be separated from him. He is only kept securely by the ways taught in the Gospel: Renunciation, total and sweet.
Complete submission to Jesus Christ. May I not forget your words. Amen.

Remind me of the good you have done
